The Writer's Journey: WTH

I got home from an errand a little while ago, and heard an enormous chorus of police cars when I got out of the car. the last time I heard so many sirens a policeman had been shot, so I was a little concerned about what might be going on. maybe it was just an accident nearby? maybe it was a robbery? no dice.

The local university was attacked by a shooter, possibly two shooters, and at least six people were shot. Three have died and several are pretty bad off. That’s bad enough- to happen so close to where I live and to have the community rocked by yet another shooting (last week it was a school 15 minutes from me).

But, this particular building is where my spouse attends courses. He was not there at the time, luckily. the campus has always felt pretty safe to me. I have taken courses there before, and I go to regular events there. It’s unbelievable that this would happen here- and it’s not even some over-stressed student who lost it. A professor? at UAH? I don’t understand any of this.

And btw- no student alerts were sent out. there was no student notification of any kind, even when the campus was on lock down. Spouse and friend of spouse, both of whom attend courses in the building, got no email, no text and no phone call. great job, UAH.

Update: 2+ hours after the shootings, the emails are just now being received.

Oh My Lady adds Park Han-byul

Park Han-byul has been added to the cast along with Chae Rim and Choi Siwon. the romantic-comedy plot is about an ordinary ajumma (Chae Rim) who becomes the manager to a top star (Choi).

Park’s character Yura was Min-woo’s (Choi Siwon) first love back in their university years. she reappears in his life after returning from studying abroad, now a marketing director of a fashion brand, and has a big part in making Min-woo a star by making him the fashion brand’s model and providing him with sponsored clothing. Park was cast to portray the character’s chic, cosmopolitan appeal.

In other news, Chae Rim’s co-star from Dal Ja’s Spring, singer-actor Lee Hyun-woo, has also been cast. He will play the director of a musical production company who once wanted to be an actor, who turned instead to directing and then producing. his horrible temper emerges when performance time approaches, but he is skilled at his job.

I’ve only seen Park Han-byul (who may be more famous as “Se7en’s girlfriend” than as an actress) in one drama, Fantasy Couple, and really disliked her there. (Not enough sweetness to be sweet; not enough gusto to be a fun antagonist. Just meh.) That was three years ago and hopefully she’s improved, but despite those hopes I’m preparing myself for some more wooden performances from her and Lee Hyun-woo. I am looking forward to the chemistry between Chae Rim and Choi Siwon, which will hopefully carry the drama.

The new Monday-Tuesday SBS series held its first script reading on February 5. It follows wish Upon a Star and airs in March.

No, Buzz Is Not Being Clipped From Gmail. It MAY Get A Separate Web App Though.

Well, pretty much everyone screwed up this story today, so it’s time for some clarification. Despite what you may have read all over the web, Google is not removing Buzz from Gmail. At least not anytime soon.the confusion stems from Google VP of Product Marketing Bradley Horowitz’s comments to Search Engine Land’s Danny Sullivan earlier today at TED. Horowitz said that Google was considering separating Buzz from Gmail. But what he meant was that they’d consider making another app that you can use outside of Gmail, not that it would be ripped from Gmail itself, Google has clarified. I mean, it has been out for three whole days, and usage is skyrocketing, did anyone really think Google was going to mute it so quickly?All that said, there are plenty of people who want to turn off Buzz in their Gmail entirely. These are users who opted-in to using it, but are now overwhelmed by its noise. But you can do that in the footer of Gmail easily. There’s also no shortage of people concerned about the service’s privacy ramifications. Google already made some tweaks last night to alleviate some problems ? expect more of those soon.So everyone just calm down and keep buzzing. University of Alabama-Huntsville shooting leaves three dead

Three people were killed and several more injured in a shooting Friday in a science building at the University of Alabama’s Huntsville campus, university officials said.

A woman was in custody, but university spokesman Ray Garner said he could not identify her or the victims. Local television stations reported she is a faculty member.

Trent Willis, chief of staff for Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle, said several other people had been shot in addition to the four Garner reported, but he did not have an exact number or their conditions.

Huntsville Hospital spokesman Burr Ingram said the hospital was treating three victims. two were in critical condition and one was in stable condition. it was not clear if the three included the one injured person university officials announced.

Sophomore Erin Johnson told The Huntsville Times a biology faculty meeting was under way when she heard screams coming from the room.

The shooting happened in the university’s Shelby Center, a science building. University police secured the building and students were cleared from it.

The Huntsville campus has about 7,500 students in northern Alabama, not far from the Tennessee line.

The university posted a message on its Web site Friday afternoon telling students the campus was closed Friday night and all students were encouraged to go home. Counselors were available to speak with students.
